Art is one of the ways that I express the emotions I am feeling which I cannot explain through words on paper or through speech. I try to use each piece that I create to illustrate what I am thinking at the time that I am creating it. For instance, I tend to use brighter colors when I am trying to express happiness. I use darker colors when I am trying to depict a more serious or somber mood.
As an artist, I would like to strengthen the techniques I currently use, as well as branch out to other techniques. For example, for the work I do outside school, I tend to favor oil paintings, but I would like to try doing more pen and ink, or even using the computer to create.
With my ceramic work, I like to use a lot of detail in my pieces and stay with earth tones. I would like to develop more into using brighter colors and making the colors relate more to the pieces as a whole. I feel as though it would create more interest to my pieces.
Through the course of my work, I like to begin by doing some research. That might mean looking at pictures to generate ideas or talking with others about the techniques they may be using. I usually like to base my work of off others. My sketchbook influences my work by allowing me to get a visual of my original idea. It helps me see how I am going to make something and also how I am going to alter it if I need to. After doing research, I like to experiment with what my final project is going to be by constructing it. Along the way I may use what I did or add on to it to make it more like what I drew in my sketchbook. I usually choose the techniques and themes of the piece based on my interests.
My current ceramic work is mainly influenced by nature. The glaze colors are usually earth tones or the actual designs on my pieces may have different elements from nature. My outside work is currently influenced by nature as well. My more current pieces show the growth in my work compared to my prior work. I have learned to manipulate color in a more interesting way. As I move further into my experience with ceramics, I seek to make my pieces more visually appealing. I would like the viewer to look at my work and see beyond what is in front of them. Each work day is filled with new learning experiences and ways for me to develop as an artist.
